Foodstuffs: Oct. 22-Oct. 27

by Rachel Wilkerson on October 22, 2012

Eric and I have an abbreviated grocery list this week; somehow, we ended up with a lot of extra food last week, so we’re still working on finishing it all. We also had this delicious spread on Saturday, when I woke up, saw it was Sweetest Day, and decided to show Eric I care about him through food.

I slipped out of the house and went to Randall’s, where, intoxicated by the smell of fresh-baked bread and fresh donuts, I bought way too much food for two people, as well as coffee drinks from Starbucks. Nothing says “happy Hallmark holiday!” like white chocolate cinnamon cream cheese (except maybe terrible/awesome lingerie from a discount store). Whatever — I love surprises, breakfast food, and October, so I was grinning from ear to ear as I was picking up all those goodies on Saturday morning. We’re still working on finishing everything.

Here’s the menu for the rest of this week!

Breakfasts

Nothing fancy this on the menu for this week, but I did decide to throw some Greek yogurt and blueberries into the mix.

Lunches

All leftovers, all the time!

Dinners

Beef stew (from last week)

Fajitas (from last week)

Crock Pot pulled pork + green beans

Pizza

Pesto eggs

Spaghetti or tacos (oh, ground beef, you’re so versatile!)

We’ll go shopping for food for the Halloween party on Friday or Saturday.

Workouts

A few people have asked me to share my workout schedule, so I thought I’d include that in this post as well. This probably isn’t the best week to start doing this, as, historically, the week before I throw a Halloween party involves a lot of fun nights of running errands and eating Halloween candy and not a lot of exercise or healthy eating. But hey — we’ll see how it goes.

Monday evening: yoga. (DONE! I did 40 minutes of Vinyasa yoga, and during all 40 minutes, my body felt like it needed WD-40. I have no idea why but I couldn’t get anywhere close to “flow” tonight.)

Wednesday evening: spin + yoga for approximately 50 minutes total.

Thursday evening: spin + yoga for approximately 40 minutes total.

Saturday afternoon: 25 minute spin. (Yeah…we’ll see how that works out.)

What’s your week looking like?

I have to share…I made this tonight: http://www.edibleperspective.com/home/2012/4/16/salt-vinegar-kale-mashed-potatoes.html

O in my mouth!

I was going to workout tonight but realized I could bear to watch the debates at the apartment building gym (sure, we live in the gayest neighborhood on earth, but I’m sure with my luck I would be stuck working out next to a log cabin republican) and I needed to make aforementioned recipe. Tomorrow is another day! Looking forward to some weight and elliptical…or a run in our once-again cool weather!

We are running a lot this week, mostly, in terms of workouts. Next week I’m starting a new plan to get to the gym twice a week to lift. I miss it.

In terms of food, we have leftovers from last week we are working our way through before we get to the grocery store. I’m trying to get the fridge down to condiments and cheese before shopping whenever possible and we are working on only buying what we will eat between grocery trips to bring down our grocery expenses. This weekend will be fun because my younger brother’s hockey season starts at a rink really close to my house, so I get to see him play on Saturday and have him spend part of his weekend with us. I’m excited.

That’s a lot of spin! Do you like the spin classes? I haven’t gone to one in forever…but I know I should do something rather than running all the time!

That cream cheese looks awesome!

I’ve actually been spinning at home! I bought my own bike a couple years ago and now that we have a nice workout room, I’ve been really motivated to start using it. There’s no need to worry about getting to a class at a certain time or dealing with traffic or having to pay. I love spin classes with a big group, but for now, this is just as cheap/easy/convenient as running or walking and I really love it, so it’s just on there a lot because I know I’m likely to do it!

Do you follow a specific spin routine or just mix it up? If you follow a routine, please post it! I would love to have some go-to spin workouts to use on my own!

So, my preferred style of spin (from my favorite classes and then later teaching) is to use a playlist to set the pace of the class…just keeping your pace on beat with the music. When I plan it out in advance, I’d just be sure to mix in some slower songs for climbing and some faster songs for jumps. I also usually do something different on the verses and the chorus (so, for example, verses might be done in 2nd position with a medium resistance and then the chorus might be done in 1st position fast, with low resistance). After doing this for a long time, I can kind of just make it up as I go along — like, “Oh, I should climb now, let me put on a climbing song off of one of these old playlists.” I really should put some time into downloading new music and making set playlists in advance but I just haven’t made it a priority in a while.

That said, I really would like to share them, so I’ll try to keep track of my workouts as I’m doing them and post the songs/what I did during them here regularly!

Spinning at home must be super convenient. You could even eat the donuts ON the bike to minimize the damage!
