Foodstuffs: Jan. 14 – Jan. 21

farmers market edit 2

So, I have to say…our foodstuffs from last week worked out better than they have in a long time. Despite the fact that Tuesday night was a total disaster, a lot of the other recipes we made were awesome, especially the beer brats. We had them with Brussels sprouts, buttered bread, and red wine and it was just such a good dinner.

I feel like we hadn’t quite gotten meal planning down to a science just yet, and weekends were a particularly neglected area. But last week, Eric made a really solid grocery list and meal plan that took us through the weekend. We didn’t eat out once, which I’m pretty sure now means we haven’t eaten out once since New Year’s Eve! And after working on a routine for creatives, I realized that cooking on weekends is one of the things that I really need to do, so I’m glad we made more of an effort to make that happen. Knowing we had some delicious meals on the agenda was definitely a stress relief.

On Saturday, I was feeling like we should try to keep our good food thing going, so we hit the Urban Harvest farmers market in Houston again (in the pouring rain again…ugh). Due to the weather, it was a “get in and GTFO” kind of a trip, and our biggest focus was getting meat — enough to last us two weeks this time, so we could stay in bed next Saturday! But we also picked up few more items while we were there, including rosemary and garlic bread and some “wilde” honey. (The “e” totally makes it more local/organic.)

By Sunday night, I was seriously just like, “Fuck yeah! Delicious food!! GO TEAM!!!”

Here’s what we’re planning to make this week!

Breakfasts

We got ground breakfast sausage on Saturday, which Eric made into sausage patties lsat night. He also got some English muffins at the grocery store; I tend to go on English muffin kicks and honestly, it’s been way too long since my last one. Also, sausage + English muffins is a wonderful combination. I had that for breakfast this morning topped with havarti cheese and it was great.

Lunches

Nothing special in this area; leftovers per usual!

Dinners

Grilled steak + steamed cauliflower + bread (This was pretty much an entirely farmers market meal and it was so good!)

Baked chicken meatballs (I made these last night with ground pork instead of chicken; they were good but took about 40 minutes — not 15, as the recipe claims — to cook through. Had I known that ahead of time, it would have been fine, but putting them back in the oven repeatedly sort of threw off the rest of the meal.)

Chicken and spinach pasta

Pesto eggs

Tacos

Pizza

Lasagna soup

Workouts

Last week, I got in all three of my workouts, including my class outside of my house. I’m keeping the same plan for this week, and I’m looking forward to trying a new podcast from Three Dog Yoga tonight at the suggestion of a friend who read my post yesterday!

How is your week looking?

The lasagna soup sounds like everything I’ve ever wanted in life. Thanks for sharing the recipe! I’m definitely going to try it… and make it occasionally for as long as I live.

I LOVE this enthusiasm! I’m the same way whenever I can get myself to the farmers market – It makes me *want* to do a better job. Congrats on getting into the swing of things! :)

That picture of the beets is making me want roasted beets! (One of the few things Matt won’t eat … beets, squash, and brussels sprouts. WTF man.) Our week is a little bit off the walls – we’re going snowboarding tomorrow so we’ll have lunch up there and then figure out dinner when we feel like it. One meal I’ve been really loving though is a couple slices of cinnamon-raisin toast and a couple of eggs scrambled in coconut oil. It takes 5 minutes and is so tasty. I get the When Pigs Fly cinnamon-raisin bread (http://www.sendbread.com/) about once every couple months as a splurge :)

I LOVE cinnamon raisin toast in the mornings similar to how you do it…every few months as a splurge. I let myself forget about it and then it’s just the BEST treat in the morning! It smells so good toasting…ugh, now I want it. I will have to check out the one you recommended!

Enjoy snowboarding!!

i can’t say how much I love these posts. They seem totally casual and no big deal, but each and every one seems to spark some sort of meal idea in my brain, or teaches me something new, not to mention usually points me in the direction to at least one great recipe to try myself. Keep it up, dear! It’s a post full of valuable information!

I really appreciate that! It’s funny because glancing over my posts for the past couple weeks, I was like, Jeez, I have had a LOT of Foodstuffs posts haven’t I? (It just feels like they are really frequent to me?) But on the other hand, I don’t know, there’s something about them that I really enjoy writing! Maybe it gets back to my old days of blogging solely about food and workouts or something? Anyway, I’m glad to know that they are resonating/useful/informative because even though I always love writing them, I worry that they like…don’t “count” as a legit blog post.

Just wanted to second Heather’s comment! It definitely sparks new ideas for recipes or for how I can plan out my week a little better.

Eager to hear more about how you and Eric are making meal planning work on weekends. I always am dragging by the weekend and tend to be lacking fresh groceries–hard to find the inspiration to cook!

Love these posts. I’ve found a handful of yummy recipes through the links here, and it’s motivating when I’m not feeling particularly motivated to workout. See: reading this post has pretty much ensured that the gym will be the stop I make between work and home tonight (need to work on my arms!).

This week I tried something new and prepped Chicken Tikka Marsala and Chicken Tortilla soup to have on hand for meals during the week. I also bought some stuff to make tostadas and chicken sausages too. My husband and I are rarely home for dinner at the same time so I was wasting my time making meals. It’s working great so far!
