This week felt really long, despite the fact that it was a short work week. I’m working from home today and am enjoying feeling all warm and cozy inside on this very gray day.
Here are some good reads for you for the weekend!
Down with Toy Apartheid: the Gender Apocalypse of the Playroom Can’t Come Soon Enough [Deadspin]
Flank Biting and the Hate Read [Helen Jane]
My Mom Was an Underground Railroad for Abused Women: What She Taught Me About Feminism and Fear [xoJane]
Teachers and Mothers: Our Real Heroes After Tragedy [New York Magazine]
Writing Advice from Auntie Mara [Mara Wilson Writes Stuff]
A Resolution for Routine [Braid Creative]
I also started reading Radical Homemakers: Reclaiming Domesticity from a Consumer Culture this week. I’m not very far along, but it’s really interesting so far! I will share more thoughts on it when I’m finished reading.
All right, it’s an open thread, so do your thang! Share whatever is on your mind and good links in the comments! And if you want to see your work on The House Always Wins, don’t forget to send me your post ideas!

Happy (almost) weekend! Even though it’s a short week, waking up for work has been a shock to the system and I’m exhausted! Bring on sleeping in!
This article sums up perfectly why body commentary of any kind is just wrong: http://www.xojane.com/issues/scary-skinny
And this article gave me a new hero: http://jezebel.com/5972909/meet-gisella-perl-the-auschwitz-abortionist-who-saved-countless-lives-during-the-holocaust
Party on!
and oh my, I just got a little blogger chub for the “resolution for routine” post…with printable PDF! this fits in with my goal of sitting down each week to identify goals for the coming week.
Yeahhhh it fits in perfectly to what we were talking about earlier this week! Glad you liked it!
Ohhh kids’ toys. They are mostly a waste of money anyway. I like to keep it simple with things that will last through many stages – balls, blocks, books, etc. In the end, my son ends up playing with leaves, sticks, and tupperware anyway.
The toy article reminded me of a debate on my community’s website from years back. I didn’t even live here when the infamous “boy’s hat” thread brought a mix of heated debate and belly laughs to our neighborhood, but people STILL reference it. If you have time, it’s a pretty funny read: http://gawker.com/166214/the-park-slope-hat-spat-read-all-the-emails

I read that last year at some point and it is HILARIOUS. I had forgotten about it…time for a re-read!
Radical Homemakers has been on my “to read” list for a while (along with a million other things). Can’t wait to hear your review!

Ugh, so far it’s making me want to quit my job and buy a farm…or at least go to the farmers market a lot more regularly! Very inspiring though. Will definitely share more when I’m done!
I always enjoy your Friday Social reading lists….thank you for finding authors who put my thoughts into words far more eloquently than I can. I really enjoyed the Helen Jane article on Hate Reading and I’m PROUD to say that I’ve stopped doing that myself! yay! And I didn’t even have to buy a pet chicken (although I actually want one…but that’s another story for another day.)
Also, I’m happy to announce I’ve added Mara Wilson Writes Stuff to my reader. Thank you for sharing her.
Best wishes for a wonderful weekend!

I love that article on the “Toy Apartheid”. I’ll never forget once when I was younger, I was passing by the toy aisles in a WalMart or something, and there was a father dragging his young son down an aisle. The boy was crying and holding onto a little pink toy vacuum, while his dad just kept angrily telling his son that he couldn’t have it because it was a girl’s toy. That, along with my own experiences of being bullied for liking “boy’s stuff” (uh, I’m sorry video games and action figures are more entertaining than dolls that just sit there and do nothing), make me want to strangle the people who flip out whenever a kid wants to play with something they “shouldn’t” because it’s not “gender appropriate”. Just let your kid be who they are and enjoy themselves, dammit.
Oh my Godddd…that is heartbreaking! I told Eric last week that if I ever found out any kid’s parent said something like that to our (completely hypothetical) child, I would go ape shit. I’m so disgusted by people who seriously have a problem with a kid playing with whatever they want to play with!
Seriously! And it’s not like the kid is thinking “Oh, hey, I’m playing with this because I want to be the opposite gender/gay/whatever” (not that there’s anything wrong with that, anyway); they just want to play with it because it’s FUN.
