I really fucking love Valentine’s Day. Maybe the fact that I’ve spent 24 of my 27 Valentine’s Days single has helped me realize that February 14th is so not about romantic love; it’s just about love and telling people you love them. It’s also about pretty shades of pink and red, two colors I happen to like quite a bit. Why is there not good Valentine’s Day cheer?! Why are people not volunteering and donating at Valentine’s Day like they do at Christmas?!! It makes no sense to me.

Anyway, if you, too, love Valentine’s Day, then you may appreciate the following:

Two years ago, I decided to channel some of your VDay love and sent elementary school Cookie Monster-themed valentines and chocolate chip + superfood cookies in the mail to about a dozen friends. It was the biggest hit! Last year, everyone was coupled up, myself included, so it didn’t cross my mind. This year, I’m single and can’t wait to mail out the valentines again, especially to the few girlfriends I have who are single too and may not get something otherwise. You are right in that it is SO fun to do nice things and show love for ANYONE in your life. My Stepdad has been giving me VDay cards for the past 10 years — as a teenager it was weird, but now I understand it is ALWAYS nice to know someone cares about you.

So true! One of the most fun Valentine’s Days I ever had was actually when I was sans date. I invited a dozen girlfriends over for cocktails and we went to see the movie Valentine’s Day. Not the greatest movie, but really great company!

Oh man, I love Taylor Mali. Falling in love is like owning a dog is one of my favorites. My very favorite, I think, is The Naked Gardener. It’s the 3rd one on this page: http://usedfurniturereview.com/2010/11/16/three-poems-by-taylor-mali/

I saw him perform live a few years ago, and he was just ridiculously charming.

Um, the Falling in Love is like Owning a Dog? I’m like 95% certain that’s the poem my friend’s twin read at my friend’s wedding. Our friend who were marrying have rescued 3 schnauzers, so it was very fitting!

My boyfriend coaches hockey and has a game on Valentines Day so we actually celebrated on Sunday. We went snowshoeing and out to lunch, and got each other $25 or under presents. It was nice- he got me flowers and an owl lunchbox! We also spent all weekend snowed in together due to the blizzard up here in the Northeast, so it’s been kind of an extended love fest

We are going to a nearby casino Thursday night and I can. Not. Wait!!! We went two years ago for our present to each other and had a great time. We got a package that included dinner, gambling money, a bottle of wine and wine glasses and our room had a jacuzzi. The getaway was our gift to each other and I really enjoyed the experience, rather than gifts that might not be as meaningful. This time I’m getting myself a present as well and taking advantage of 20% off a spa treatment and getting a peditini!!!

Happy Valentine’s Day!!!

I totally agree: Valentine’s Day is about love — not just romantic love, but *love* love. To that end, my best-ever Valentine’s gift was from my Dad: he sent me a bouquet of flowers and a note that told me to “Kick butt and take no prisoners.” I’ve forgotten the random gifts from boyfriends, but I’ll always remember that.
